Little Nic was born on the 14th April 1996 at Nobles Hospital, Isle of Man. He was the son of Elaine and Peter, brother of Jemma, Lauren, Kirsty and Simon.

He loved playing, and was especially fond of building huge, structurally unsound, towers out of his Duplo. Nic had a great ability to do shaped jigsaws which he could complete at remarkable speed. His favourite television programs were Postman Pat, Tellytubbies and Barney, which he would watch endlessly. Above all, he loved people - no visitor to his home was safe and would be dragged to the floor to play with him. His little personality made him adored by everyone who was fortunate enough to have met him.

Nic was diagnosed as epileptic at an early age, and suffered seizures thoughout his life. However, he received excellent care from the Isle of Man Health Service, especially at Nobles Hospital. We also took him to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children on a number of occasions to see one of the country's leading neurologists, Dr Elaine Hicks. Thanks to this help, his condition was showing signs of improvement and with the Isle of Man Education Service providing special assistance the outlook was hopeful.

Then on the night of January 16th 1999 he tragically passed away as the result of an epileptic seizure. He was two years old.

Words cannot really express the grief that everyone who knew Nic has suffered. We know he is safe in God's hands now, but we all wish more than anything that this had not happened. He touched the hearts of all who knew him during his short life, and we hope that through the memorial fund we might be able to help other little children who have epilepsy and perhaps do something to prevent other similar tragedies from occurring.

This page is dedicated to Nic's memory.

The Adventures of Nic Read all about Nic's adventures! In a series of e-mail messages to his friend Joe, Nic shows remarkably advanced writing skills for a two-year-old as he recounts some of his more memorable exploits, including numerous assaults on airline staff and passengers (he didn't like flying), various incidents in shops, and in a final tirade he complains bitterly of the low assessment mark he was given when he accidentally fell asleep in the middle of his test.

The NSE has the largest and most active clinical research group in the world, including the only MRI unit dedicated to the research and treatment of epilepsy.
